Purnima in the month of Shravana is known as Shravana or Shravani Purnima as per Hindu Panchang. Bathing, penance and charity on this day are considered highly propitious in religious scriptures (Grantha). On the same day, festival of Raksha Bandhan is also celebrated. In Central and North India, the festival of Kajri Purnima is also celebrated on this day. Yagyopaveet or Upnayan Sanskar are also performed on this day. Shravana Purnima is considered highly auspicious to get rid of Chandra Dosha.

Shravana Purnima Vrat and Puja Rituals

Shravana Purnima is celebrated differently in different regions. Therefore, the Puja rituals of this Purnima are as follows:

●  It is a tradition to celebrate Raksha Bandhan on this day. Hence, one should worship all Gods and Goddesses, and tie Raksha Sutra on your wrist.
●  One should also perform oblation for their ancestors on this day.
●  Offer fodder to a cow, flour (Atta) to ants and granules to fishes.
●  On Shravana Purnima, Moon is in its complete essence (qualities). So, a person is freed from Chandra Dosha by worshipping Moon on this day.
●  Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi are also worshipped on this Purnima and bless people with happiness, money and prosperity.
●  As Lord Shiva are especially worshipped in the month of Shravana, so it is considered highly auspicious to perform the Rudrabhishek of Shivji on this day.

Kajri Purnima

On the occasion of Shravana Purnima, Kajri Purnima is also celebrated in some regions of Central India and North India. Women sow barley by putting soil in a vessel made from leaves on Navami and immerse (Visarjan) them in the river with lots of celebrations on the day of Purnima. They fast on this day for the long life and happiness of their children.

Importance of Shravana Purnima

Shravana Purnima is celebrated according to different religious beliefs in different regions of India. It is celebrated as Raksha Bandhan in North India, Nariyal Purnima and Avani Avittam in South India, as Kajri Punam in Central India and as Pavitropana in Gujarat. On the auspicious occasion of Ashadha Purnima, the holy journey of Amarnath (Amarnath Yatra) commences and it also concludes on Shravana Purnima. On the same day, water is offered to the Shivling and Kavad Yatra ends.
