When one is aware of ‘what is me,’ and the journey from untruth to truth begins. The day holds a great importance as many devotees pay gratitude and offerings to their dead ancestors. There are Amavasyas that are considered to be very auspicious namely Mahalaya Amavasya which occurs in the month of Ashwayuja and Mauni Amavasya which occurs in the month of Hindu Magh month.
When the moon changes from new moon to full moon, the bright half is known as Shukla Paksha. While Krishna Paksha is the period when the moon changes from full moon to new moon. Hence, Shukla Paksha is the fortnight that begins with Amavasya.
When the lunar month ends on no moon day, then the Hindu calender is termed as Amanta or Amanta lunisolar calendar. The calendar is strictly followed in the states of Gujarat, Assam, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Tripura, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh.
On the other hand, if the lunar month ends on full moon day, then the Hindu calendar is known as Purnimanta or Purnimanta lunisolar calendar. This type of calendar is followed in the states of Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh. Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
It is believed that the life process slows down on the day of Amavasya. When a certain slow down happens, that is when you notice the change. But, if you are occupied with something, you won?t be able to notice; the body is just you.
You must have heard that if people are mentally imbalanced, they become more imbalanced on the day of Amavasya. So, on that day, if you are mentally imbalanced, your brain will become more imbalanced. This happens because of the gravitational force of the moon on the earth. So, if you are looking for dissolution or liberation, Amavasya is the perfect day.
Whatever is your state, it gets a little more heightened because your blood is being pulled upward. So, the energy of entire world gets pulled in the upward direction. For a spiritual seeker who is always trying out different ways to enhance his/her energies, the Amavasya date or day is like a boon from mother nature.
Mahalaya Amavasya is celebrated as Pitra Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. This special day is celebrated by making an offering and honoring our ancestors. Kala bhairava Shanthi is celebrated on the auspicious night of Mahalaya Amavasya for the wellbeing of dead ancestors. All these hundreds of thousands of generations that lived on this planet before us, have given us something or the other. The language that we speak, the place we live in, our behavior, our genes, our homely place, our buildings almost everything that we own today has come to us from our generations. So, this is considered to be a perfect time to offer prayers to the departed souls.
Holy Practices on this Day:
● Tarpan at home
● Pind Daan
● Pitra Bhoj
● Read Holy Scriptures
Amavasya falls at the beginning of the new lunar month which lasts for around 30 days. Most devotees observe a fast on that day and offer food to their dead ancestors. According to Garuda Purana (Preta Khanda), Lord Vishnu is believed to have said that the ancestors come to their descendants to partake of their food. So, on this day, devotees perform Shraddha and prepare food, and offer it to their dead ancestors. From the point-of-view of rituals, Amavasya date is considered very pivotal.
● As per Hindu Calendar, Amavasya is no moon day and Purnima is full moon day.
● For a tough, and hard working, Amavasya is an important aspect. For a subtle and sensitive person, Purnima plays an integral role. Both have their own powers and energies.
● When we talk about qualities, Amavasya is action and Purnima is love.
● Amavasya is an absence while Purnima is a tremendous presence.
● Usually, no auspicious work is done on the day of Amavasya. On the other hand, Purnima is associated with divinity and prosperity.
